I am porting a course from BlackBoard 8 (vista) and came across a "Fill in the Blank" Question that I can't implement in ATutor (did i miss anything?)

The "Fill in the Blank" question template has the following fields:
-Answering text (text box)
-Value (%)
-Grading Scheme (contains, Equals, Regular Expression)

And settings:
-Answering box width
-Case sensitive on/off

May be the ATutor "Open ended" question type could be enhanced to support an optional answering text (case insensitive / space trimmed)?

You would use "Open Ended" questions for fill in the blank, and choose answer size "one word"

As for the enhancements, some would not be difficult to add. You might try your hand at creating an ATutor patch, and we'll use it to add case insensitive and space trimming.

The box width and grading scheme would need a little more effort, updating the db to store the choices, creating the options in the question editor. It maybe something we can look at for a future release. You're welcome to give it a try yourself, if you want to create a clone from github, and submit potential changes there.

This is a question type in which I have also expressed interest on another thread. I looked at the open ended solution and all it gives me is a text book in which to write something. But there is no way to set up text boxes in which the student can write something. A cloze text box should also contain a hidden answer, so the student can discover if he has gotten it right. The eXe close lets one set up passages, questions or tables in tinymce, encrypts the answers, and provides a instant answer checking.
Moodle also has the facility to make cloze.

eXe works great, but it can't be submitted, graded, or registered in the grade book.

I have noticed that Claroline and its clones permit "cloze" type questions, though I have also noted that Claroline et al are considerably more complex than ATutor and not many server companies support them.

The "cloze" are within the range of QTI question types.

This thread is almost 5 years old - has the cloze type test been implemented? If so, where is it? How do I obtain it if it is available as an add-in?

The current open-ended type is fine for limited uses, or am I missing something here - is it possible to change the location of the text entry box? That alone would take care of my needs.

There isn't a cloze question type planned.

It might be something we'd integrate if contributed by the community, though the QTI support would need to be updated as well to handle the question type.

OK, thanks for the quick reply. Is it possible to change the location of the text entry box? I don't see any way to do that in the editor. That alone would take care of my needs.

There isn't a way to move the box with the editor.

You could probably do it by modifying the associated template, but that would affect everyone.
