I've been testing on the version at atutor.ca.

first of all, 1.5.4 seems to be a great new release! and as far as I have seen most of it also works in the beta smile some comments and bugs:

profile pictures
works as specified, except for:
* you can not add a picture when you create a new user, neither can you add / change a users picture when editing the user account as an administrator
* adding a profile picure were supposed to be on the profile info page, but is moved to a new page. not a big problem though, just curious why this was done?

directory pages
just a small note for you, I believe the "graduation hat" icon for instructors is a very Canadian / American icon, as the rest of the world does not have those. I'd prefer a different icon, such as a user in a different color. also, if we use icons to indicate users' status I believe the status column in the directory could be removed (as less is more!)

forum imrovements
seems to work fine! small thing: the users name links to that users profile page, which is good, but also the users picture should link to it (just move the </a> to after the IMG tag). this as users will click on the picture and expect to be taken somewhere. the same should go for inbox messages

user admin
works fine as far as I can see. a detail is that I'd prefer a default option to be selected for the last login field, say, "have not", not "select".

it is not specified, but I have always wanted an option to see which course a given student participates in. I hoped this would be a part of the enrollment manager, but it seems it's not.

inbox
haven't quite identified the bug yet, but when logged in as a student, AND viewing a sent message AND trying to transfer that message to the inbox, it is deleted.

at the same time the receiver of that message received it wtice.

works fine when logged in as an instructor, and works fine if your not viewing the message you wish to transfer.

tests
love that we have new question types, but believe the sorting questions could benefit a lot from some javascript, enabling you to drag and drop elements in their right order. I believe smallish tweaking to the JS used for the graphical matching question type could do this pretty easely.

profile pictures
* adding/changing profile pictures was removed. they can still delete the images, if they exist. it is unlikely admins will have pictures of users on their system.
* the profile picture was added as a module, that is the reason. modules can't easily alter existing pages or sections. (they can only add new sub-pages).

directory pages
noted.

forum imrovements
the profile picture is a link on the profile page to the original image. it would be confusing to have the same profile picture linking to different places in different areas.

user admin
we'll take a look at making that change. as you can imagine that feature was a bit tricky to implement because of that control.

there is an item in the bug tracker which would list each student's courses on their edit profile page (for admins).

inbox
I'll take a look at it.

tests
I think this item is also in the bug tracker. I think it would be best to put the feature out there for people to use then make any additional changes after we get some real usage feedback.

profile pictures: I cannot remember that being removed, and it's actually a bit of a problem. we often start courses with a gathering, taking pictures of the students and showing them the apps we will use. many of our users are not very tech savvy, to put it that way, and we *will* need to help some of them with uploading pictures.

if this is not possible, an admin possibility to log in as a student could do almost the same thing, and would probably be useful for other situations as well.

forum: I don't believe this will be confusing, as the links will be in different contexts, but I'll just fix this myself.

more bugs:

but at your demo server, and my server, forum posts from the (first) course forum is duplicated into the group forum, and vice versa.

at my server: profile pages does not load completely (only the header file loads it seems, nothing more after <a name="content"></a> when viewing source)

also at my server, when logged in as admin, selecting a user and pressing "edit", a plank page is presented and nothing more.

An issue that just came up is how to specify options for group tools. With the addition of the Minutes to Edit feature for forum, there should be a way to use that feature for group forums. Currently there is no way to edit and make use of that feature.

About the profile pictures, I woud like to suggest to use it also on the chat beside the username so as to give more detail who is posting.

Joel : you are right..

I guess the group forums should be improved anyway, but I don't know the scope of this work. what I would prefer was to manage group forums where you manage the course forums. that is, if you decide to use a forum for a group, you get an option under manage -> forums to add and edit forums only available for that / those groups.

this would imply that
a) the group forums would have their own title, not use the group name for title
b) there would be needed a enw header. not "group forums", but "group forums: group 1" ro similar.
c) each group could have more forums than one (this is actually the main reason we hardly ever use group forums)
d) ..their own description
e) ..and could use the minutes to edit feature.

a simple fix could be a checkbox beside the forum tool for groups saying "allow editing: no [or] for 15 minutes" - and not give more options than that.

roselmichael: the profile pictures should be made the way that you can easily use them in other parts of Atutor. they are allready in the new forums, chat could be an option, blog comments could be an option, directory page could be an option etc..

Yes vegard, i saw the profile pictures in the forum indeed. I didn't check it before I posted. Sorry. And yes it should also be on the other pages where it would be a feature.

I checked some other features together with a colleagues of mine and we found some that maybe should be brought to attention to this forum. Here they are:

side menu glossary:
it's always empty even if we populated the glossary with some terms and put in some content with the glossary term

glossary beside home:
we would suggest to have maybe a way to click a letter at the top of the glossary page and the glossary terms starting with that letter comes up instead of scrolling way down and/or a way to search only those terms in the glossary area.

side menu search:
Is it really only to search through the content not the entire course?

forum:
it seems that there is no clear division between posts. It's not that easy to see where the post ended. Maybe a line or dotted line between posts will help

though there is an option to grant users to edit their posts within a set time, maybe it would also be better to just give an option to delete the post and just make a new one

while on the groups forum there is check box for an option to subscribe and sometimes though it is checked when you go to the main list of forum you're still not subscribed to that forum. It's a bit confusing

blogs:
is it already working? We can't find a way to start it.

Users:
Is it possible to have more than 1 instructor for a course? How? If not, we would like to suggest that feature.

Tracking:
Can the instructor and the admin also have a way to track the students the way students track themselves in my tracker and as an addition maybe a sum of the total duration should be provided also at the end of the listing.

Tests:
Could there be a positive feedback for correct answer and a negative feedback for a wrong one and a way to enable/disable the feedback?

We hope that this is not too much. We will check other features of this beta.

Tnx

We are in a code freeze at the moment, so only bugs are being fixed. Any new features will need to be added to the Feature Requests forum for suture consideration

side menu glossary:
it's always empty even if we populated the glossary with some terms and put in some content with the glossary term
The glossary menu block seems to be working as it should. It displays items when the page being displayed has a glossary item embedded in it.

glossary beside home:
we would suggest to have maybe a way to click a letter at the top of the glossary page and the glossary terms starting with that letter comes up instead of scrolling way down and/or a way to search only those terms in the glossary area.

This is more tricky to implement than one might expect. It may work for alphabetic languages, but not so well for other types of languages. Were are open to ideas if someone can come up with a solution that will work for all languages.

side menu search:
Is it really only to search through the content not the entire course?

Yes, just content.

forum:
it seems that there is no clear division between posts. It's not that easy to see where the post ended. Maybe a line or dotted line between posts will help
It seems to be fine. Each message is in its own box. Perhaps it is a browser issues. Which one were you using.

though there is an option to grant users to edit their posts within a set time, maybe it would also be better to just give an option to delete the post and just make a new one

Deleting post is not allowed for archival reasons. It is unlikely we would add something like this.

while on the groups forum there is check box for an option to subscribe and sometimes though it is checked when you go to the main list of forum you're still not subscribed to that forum. It's a bit confusing

This appears to be working.

blogs:
is it already working? We can't find a way to start it.
Blogs are a group tool. Enable them by creating a group.
Users:
Is it possible to have more than 1 instructor for a course? How? If not, we would like to suggest that feature.
You can have as many Instructors as you like by enrolling a users then assigning them privileges through the enrollment manager.

Tracking:
Can the instructor and the admin also have a way to track the students the way students track themselves in my tracker and as an addition maybe a sum of the total duration should be provided also at the end of the listing.
Manage>Content>Content Usage

Tests:
Could there be a positive feedback for correct answer and a negative feedback for a wrong one and a way to enable/disable the feedback?
There could be p/n feedback, but not for this version. Add it to the Feature Requests forum. Turn off feedback by leaving it empty.

And BTW , all of your suggestions could be implemented if you wanted to sponser a small development project to add them.

Maybe I would just learn to code and contribute by coding. In terms of money it would be hard for me with the meager salary I get. I'm just an employee. People in position here would just opt to go for a paid LCMS/LMS than opensource or some other. It's just me here advocating atutor. It's hard to understand but it is.

That would be great if you wanted to contribute code!

We do have to recover costs, and even though we give our software away for free, everything developed for ATutor does cost money. You might pose the question to your superiors, would you rather pay a big multimillion dollar company for the privilege of using their software, with no control over the functioning of the software, or would you rather contribute an amount to a free product to get the features you need by having them developed to your specification.

Many other groups also contribute to ATutor, so any features those groups support would also be available to you, and visa versa. Many small contributions, add up to big returns for everyone.
