In 2.0 the elements of the ordering question type are not being randomized for users.

I've demonstrated this on the demo server. There is a test called "Fritday Test" and question #4 shows what I'm talking about. The order of the elements is the exact same as the correct order.

The randomize option randomizes the order in which questions appear, not the order in which items appear within individual questions.

But shouldn't the elements of an ordering question be randomized somehow? Having the correct order displayed to the student kind of defeats the whole purpose of this question type.

There never has been randomized ordering questions. You as the question developer would order them in the incorrect order yourself.

Greg,

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but how can you randomize the order without revealing it to the user?

I've attached a screen shot of the test question I referenced above. Notice that the correct order is given to the user, but I don't see how place the elements in the incorrect order, yet still tell ATutor what the correct order is.

Please advise.

Greg,

Has there been any movement on this issue? I have several uses for this question type and don't find it currently usable if the correct order is clearly shown to the user.

Thanks.

No movement. We might look at this when we do the QTI 2.1 work, though that's not in the plans until well into 2011.

For now you'll have to manually have to mix up question items.

I don't think we're on the same page....

If you randomize the elements, then the order is not correct. If you tell the system the right order, the order is given to the user.

Did you see the screenshot from a couple of posts back?

Thanks.

okay, I see what you mean. I've reported a bug, and we'll try to get the fix into next weeks release.

Thanks for working on that - I've been scratching my head on ordering questions for a long time thinking that it was operator error on my end. We too would have good use for this kind of question.

The problem originates in php. As of PHP 5.2.10 the array_rand function no longer randomizes arrays.

ca.php.net/manual/en/function.array-rand.php

The new shuffle() function isn't backwards compatible so we're looking for another way to randomize questions.
